Maderson Blue: "If that is Hadden in the crowd over there, who the hell is the feller in the purple silks?"
With the horse feeling as if some sort of trick has been played on him, Freddie makes the wise decision to take evasive action.

Ludlow 2011. That is the winning line, and the money is in the bag.
Nov11: The first hurdle win! Apart from a careless walloping of the final flight, it was a thoroughly smooth show, after Freddie got Maderson exactly as relaxed and settled as he needed. Swinging out wide to make progress was no problem, and probably helped get a good line into the hurdles in the home straight. The time was good, the second and third had confidence of their own yards behind them, and he finished much the stronger having still been a length or so down when we made that late error. Very satisfying indeed, and given his history, Maderson has crucially emerged from the race with nothing worse than the odd cut.
We did go over fences next, but things did not really turn out very successfully, so he may have a hurdling confidence booster over hurdles before another chasing attempt.

A couple of more recent Maderson Blue pictures, from Worcester in Sep 2011. His favourite "sensibly airborne" approach in study below

Aug11: Found the long absence catching him out (slightly unexpectedly) on his return at Hereford, but ran pretty well all the same to be fifth, well clear of the rest. He seems to have come out of the race sound and well, which is the main thing.
Jul11: Having been retired due to niggling injury, it was decided to exploit his proud and regal bearing by giving him a spin in show classes for ex-racehorses, but when we did a bit of work with him, the injury did not appear to be causing him any bother at all. On that basis, we will try and build him up for another stab at racing, with a race already in mind for him in August.
Jul10: Finally made it back on track, and came out of it healthier than the man on board in the picture above. Maderson was fourth at Stratford, could have been second had he not destroyed the final flight of hurdles, and it was just the tune up needed.
Apr09: After getting over his injuries from the hurdle debut, he has been further held up by a liver infection. Aaarghhh!
Feb09: Made his hurdles debut, but it did not go well, getting struck into, losing a shoe and ending up with a lot of bruising in and around his tendon. He will do much better when accident free.
Jul08: Had to put up with stand-in jockey when Seamus Durack was not available at Uttoxeter, but as the sub was Robert Thornton, he managed to live with it, and and to annoy Seamus, Maderson Blue also won. Choc thought plenty of him, and although giving the feel to a staying chaser to be, reckoned he could win another bumper.
May08: Has had a couple of bumper runs, doing well in a decent race at Lingfield, but then showing a lot of greenness when fourth at Newton Abbot. He is looking like a stayer in the making, and probably will find sharp tracks not ideal.
Mar08: Maderson Blue has joined us from Ireland, where he had been with Gerry Burke, from whom we acquired Alderbrook Girl and Canny Scot. He is unraced, and out of a half-sister to Marlborough. The delay had been due to his yard having a bit of a cough going round and the avoidance of him arriving with an unwelcome stowaway. Initially, he took a while to get at ease with the rolling Lambourn Downs, but has gradually settled in.
Pistolet Bleu won six of his eleven starts, all of which came in Group races. He won over 9 furlongs as a two year old on his debut in a Gr,. 3 race, and succeeded up to 1m 4f in Gr. 1 races, including the Prix Ganay and Grand Prix de Saint Cloud. At the time of writing, his offspring have won 121 jump races, worth £999,168. Recent winners include Sizing Europe, I'msingingtheblues (both pattern races) and in recent seasons Vodka Bleu, Katarino, Fair Le Jojo and Geos have stood out.
